Dogwoods are native to the south, but they are typically very spindly trees. They are extremely difficult to transplant and even if store-bought, they require just the right conditions to grow and bloom. The Mexican dogwood seems to overcome a lot of the shortcomings of our native ones. We have a friend here who has a number of the Mexican variety and they are handsome plants (still compact growers though) and bloom profusely. I need to beg him out of some of the "pups" and see how they do for me.
