I do still map out my seedling areas, because what comes up might not be identifiable if a tag gets lost. I simply list the plants in other gardens and that's enough. I still try to keep labels with every plant, however. Keeping your list(s) on the computer makes them easy to change with additions, corrections or deletions.

From experience, I have a piece of advice: keep a hard copy of your lists/maps every year, and/or save them separately to the pc. In future years, you will want to go back and see if you grew such and such plant, for instance.

Presently, I have taken to leaving deceased plant names on my lists, but putting a strike through them with a note on when/why they died or why I pulled them out.
