I ripped out my gardens and redid them this year (all raised beds now) so the few plants I have that attract hummers are still getting established (more will be added this next spring). I have feeders out to attract them though.

I found this tip and it has worked well for me:
Cut strips of the yellow tape construction companies use ("crime scene" tape) and attach it to the pole holding the feeder to attract Hummingbirds (like the streamers kids used to have on their bicycle handles). The fluttering grabs the bird's attention. Since these little guys like red I decided to use the cheap plastic "flags" Lowes, Home Depot, & lumber yards provide for boards that stick out past the end of vehicles. I cut them about 1/2" wide (width is not critical) and taped several together with blue painter's tape (that tape stands up well the rain!), and have 3 or 4 "sets" of these streamers on the pole. I did the same thing for a feeder at my parents' house and now my Dad says he has to refill the feeder every couple days because of all their little visitors.

Hopefully by spring the garden will be ready for "drive thru" service, but I'll probably still keep the feeders out.
