Thomas is right on there, Christina. The soil your plant is in looks really terrible. There aren't even hardly any weeds growing around there - a sure sign the soil is not hospitable.

For amendment - compost is the #1 ingredient to improve almost any soil. Usually a nursery is the place to find good compost. What you get in bags at Lowe's or Home Depot is mostly sand which really doesn't help much at all.
