Hi Jack,

There are way too many "I's" in that sentence. This is your daughter's assignment. It isn't about winning the big prize or getting the best grade, it's about teaching your daughter that whatever she creates is wonderful and that she can do it herself.

Homework assignments teach children responsibility, give them self-esteem, teach them time management and organizational skills, problem solving and the importance of planning and how to work independently.

You are teaching your daughter that what she does isn't good enough and if she does nothing, someone will do it for her. Winning is not the top prize in this project.

Go out and help your daughter find leaves and flowers (her choice), guide her in the planning process and sit with her and watch her paint. Offer suggestions (that's different than telling her how to do it) but keep your hands folded neatly in your lap.
