Those look like cleistogamous flowers which are common on Salvia lyrata during the summer. They form a calyx but don't develop a corolla (petals) or exsert their pistil or stamens. They just self-pollinate and set seeds. Like you suggest, the pretty flowers (chasmogamous flowers) are usually limited to springtime. Smiling
