Michael,

It's better to try and not separate them when they are little as often trying to separate them is more damaging. When I transplant my seedlings I use tiny crusts of the potting soil with seedlings attached. That way they aren't as stressed.

By the next spring the seedling bed is SOLID anyway. You will be shocked at how much they grow.
