The Port St. Lucie Police Department has reported that residents who need to leave their homes and use the roads, may do so now. But please continue to use caution and be careful. There are still some smaller tree limbs on the roadways, and some traffic lights are still running on generators.

A message from Port St. Lucie Mayor Gregory J. Oravec

Good morning, Port St. Lucie.

At 8:00 a.m., the City is awaking to find that we were and are very, very fortunate. The brunt of Matthew stayed just off our coast. Most of the City experienced tropical storm force winds, not those of a major hurricane.

Preliminary assessments have revealed that damage is relatively light and localized. All of our water, wastewater and stormwater facilities are fully functional. The City was well prepared, and we are seeing the results of that preparation this morning.

We are working to make sure our roads are safe, especially so that we can facilitate FPL’s efforts to restore electricity to the roughly 41,000 customers who are without it. We ask that residents please stay off of the roads this morning so that we can address this priority.

We encourage residents to call 772-873-NEWS for the latest updates; 1-800-4-OUTAGE to report a power outage; 772-871-5285 to report downed trees, signs and flooding; and, of course, 9-1-1 for any emergency. Residents can also report concerns relating to City services or conditions through their mobile devices using the AccessPSL smartphone application.

We owe many people, many thanks. Our entire emergency management team at the City and County and all the way up to the state performed at the highest level. We prepared for the worst, and given the circumstances, our hopes for the best came to be. In fact, as we are heartened here locally, it is important to recognize that many in the Bahamas and the Caribbean were not so fortunate and that our friends to the north are still in harm’s way. Also, we must stay vigilant in light of Matthew’s forecasted loop back. We will learn more and prepare for that threat in the days ahead.

Until then, information will continue to be made available on the City’s website at www.cityofpsl.com/hurricanematthew and on City’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Again, our thanks go to our emergency management team and you, our citizens, who prepared, helped each other and did what we had to do to weather this storm.
