I think your plant, is similar to my Opuntia cylindrica cristata, these were photos 2011 to 2013, if given wider space it can spread horizontally a bit but still stay in that crested form, just not too tight. It is quite a forgiving plant, since I leave it outdoors all year round, and during our rainy months, it tends to suffer from cold damage but it bounces back later. Our long, dry hot months helps it recover nicely.
