Sassafrass, how are the late planted crops doing? One year I planted some peas in late July where I had grown my early peas. The vines had been pulled out but I left the grass clipping mulch in place to keep that strip of cooler soil cool for them. They yielded a few tasty snacks before the frost came, but would have done better if they'd been germinated before I planted them, and if I had done it as soon as the old plants started to die. It was fun to try and I should have remembered to do it again this year. Way too late now.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.
