We have a plant light fixture out in the garage that is on most oten than not. We put our fish in a 55 gallon trash can filled with pond water out there all winter long and the water never freezes. We keep our soda on the bench next to the fridge out there (cause its usually filled with Ed's beer)and it never freezes.
The first winter I was going to overwinter some the gardeners I first talked to said put them in an unheated garage and water only when the soil feels dry and not frozen. The top growth all died away and I panicked and just knew they were history. Cut them all down to the soil in the pot and set the pots in a corner to wait the next couple of months till it got warm enough to take them outside to clean out and use for something else. Come around March they started growing from the roots and those things got huge that summer. And BLOOM? They were absolutely gorgeous. Told my husband then, I won't do that any more. I panic too easily. Then we put them in the sun room and he said we are NOT heating it. During the day it can get to 70ยบ in there but at night it dropped considerably, Moved them all down stairs to the basememt with lights. That got hard hauling these big pots down stairs and then dragging them back up so Ed is letting me heat at night.
My problem is I am running out of room What was 8 plants are now 30 some................. there is still about 8 of them outside I haven't brought in yet. I am, though, seriously considering taking a few cuttings from each of them and letting nature take over. They are some of the older ones and I think a little rejuvenation is in ordered. I know it will help with my back immensely.
Told hubby when he got home from work, its unaminous the garden shed will be too cold so we'll just have to park the vehicle in the shed and save the garage for the plants. Yeah that went over like a lead balloon. I was only kidding sheesh......................
