I would clip the leaves before taking them inside, mostly because they will fall off anyway and then they make a mess.
Cooler garage is fine, just be sure your area is frost free. No watering. Leave in pot or bareroot, whichever you prefer.
You may spray with a dormant oil to make sure no critters overwinter...
