We have a gasoline generator and when powerful storms are predicted, we make sure we have a lot of gas cans and both vehicles full of gas so that if we lose power, we can use the generator to power the aquarium and either a ceiling fan or portable air conditioner. I'm happy if I can have at least one cool room in the house! I don't even want to think of a storm so powerful where we'd be without electricity for many weeks on end. In cases like that, gas stations in the area would be without electricity too so we wouldn't be able to get gas.

I know some folks get whole house generators but I think that costs big $$$$. A few of our neighbors have large propane tanks buried in their yards for use with generators but all that propane kinda scares me a bit.
