Here we go again folks. It looks like this year is starting a tad early with Alberto.

It gets a bit scarier with each passing year, with more storms and they are more powerful storms! It appears 2018 is expected to be a very active Hurricane season and I really dread it. We'd never, ever evacuated a hurricane until "Irma" last September. Our property in Sebastian has many, many huge Oaks, Maples and Palm trees and when reports said that Irma was going to make a hit in our area as a high Category 3 or possibly Cat. 4, we decided to load up the dogs and luggage and we headed to the Fla. Panhandle where we'd made hotel reservations. After being on the road with thousands of others, in bumper to bumper traffic for more than twelve and a half hours, we made it to the hotel around 1:30 a.m. We checked in and got the dogs settled and we went to bed. My husband got up at about 5:30 a.m. that morning, took the dogs out for a walk, came back and turned the t.v. on and woke me up saying that he thought we might want to consider packing up and leaving because "Irma" had changed course again and was expected to hit the panhandle area of Florida! So I fed the dogs as he packed the truck and again we were on the road, this time heading NE towards South Carolina to my youngest sisters home in Greenville. After another extremely long drive of more than 12 hour, in horrendous traffic, rain and wind, we finally made it to her house where we stayed for a couple of days until the storm passed. I dreaded the awful traffic and long journey on the road that I knew we'd find on our return trip but we made it home and my hubby still says, never again, that we will just prepare for the worst, pray for the best and hunker down and ride it out.

The older I get the more I dread hurricane season. There are so many areas still rebuilding from last years storms ... it's really heartbreaking to see images (especially of Puerto Rico) where they are far, far from recovery and I pray those areas are spared from any major hurricanes this year!

Thanks Rita!
I think we're fine here Rita unless Alberto decides to take a sudden turn eastward across FL. Just more wet weather for us. The frogs will be happy!
I just hate to see it happening so early. Makes me nervous.

Boy, Alberto is pretty much booking it along at a nice 13mph clip. Good! Get thee gone!

The worst part about hunkering down for us is the fear of no AC, it is not the heat as much as it is the bugs. It will be the same when we eventually move to FL. We can stock up on water and easy to prepare foods but those bugs will do us in. Shrug!

We had a few wild but very short storms earlier this afternoon and when I looked at the weather map it showed the outer bands of Alberto whirling around us. It may not be very powerful but it is a wide storm.

We have a gasoline generator and when powerful storms are predicted, we make sure we have a lot of gas cans and both vehicles full of gas so that if we lose power, we can use the generator to power the aquarium and either a ceiling fan or portable air conditioner. I'm happy if I can have at least one cool room in the house! I don't even want to think of a storm so powerful where we'd be without electricity for many weeks on end. In cases like that, gas stations in the area would be without electricity too so we wouldn't be able to get gas.

I know some folks get whole house generators but I think that costs big $$$$. A few of our neighbors have large propane tanks buried in their yards for use with generators but all that propane kinda scares me a bit.

Gas stations, banks, everything goes out, we always keep the cars and our wallets filled. Credit cards do not work with no power. Some of our neighbors were out for about 3 1/2 weeks last fall. We were among the lucky ones who were only out for a few days and since we were not here it was not an issue. We should have stayed away longer rather than battle that returning traffic. This was the first time that NE Florida was routed through SC. We were not allowed to get on the interstate which was probably a good thing since 95 was so jammed up a lot of FL folks got off and were crowding the small roads. What a mess. I can't believe we are moving to FL, we must be nuts. Whistling Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

On our return trip back home from S.C., once we were heading back south on I-95, we saw many exit ramps blocked. A few smaller towns had law enforcement cars with their lights flashing, parked sideways and blocking the off ramps; other exits along the way had military personnel and vehicles blocking off the ramps and we even saw a few off ramps with heavy equipment like earth moving machines, blocking the exits from the interstate ... and then we began seeing large signs posted at some exits saying "NO GAS".

Northeast, probably around Ponte Vedra Beach where one of our sons lives.

Yes Lin we are blocked from getting on and maybe they finally stopped others from getting off. I know we left 2 days early and still had trouble accessing the secondary highways due to people getting off the interstate and trying the back roads. Waze and Google maps give all sorts of options. If it's September, the tropics must be heating up and it is and they are. TS Gordon formed this morning at the tip of FL.
At this point, not forecast to be a big deal for FL but we know how that goes.....keep an eye on it.
