Gene,
I cannot believe all the hog farms that have sprung up in the last couple of years. I don't know where they are spreading all that manure. I pretty much refuse to eat pork. I only buy bacon in the summer for BLT's. I guess it's mostly exported. I don't mind the smell of silage. It's not too strong or widely used around here. Wow, a mint farm. I can't imagine.

Krist,
Most of the fence rows were torn out many many many years ago here.
South of me a few miles out of town is a dirt road between two fields. They slowly took trees out shading their fields. There is a bit of wild bramble in the middle and that's the only place I've seen bluebirds. I love wild tangles. I hate to see them cleaned up.
You're an interesting addition. Keep posting and we will come. This thread goes inactive off and on.

Betty,
My family were farmers too, but back in the day. I know there are two sides to every story and not all farmers are the same.

Ginny,
Yep, you get that odor a lot! Thankfully it doesn't last long. There are a couple of places that still use the old-timey manure wagon.

RpR,
That is a sad situation. I don't like to see the bit of black dirt in the ditches around here.
People are slowly learning they have to put things back. Three miles east of me at the T intersection, it goes from my loam, to blow sand, and yes it blows hard out there in the open. They put windows in and I think belonged to Peasants Forever because of the strip plantings. Now it's all torn out and farmed again.
I had such a visual from that!

Rj,
You know you are from the Midwest when it's in the 30's and you don't even wear a coat out to haul Christmas in from the garage.

Awesome conversations everyone!
