No I never did that, but it might extend the bloom. Just saw an article in our local paper this morning about extending bloom time in a vase. Tricks included using lemon soda, vodka or bleach in the water. I use a sprinkling of sugar, and change the water every day. I also recut the stem every 3-4 days. By the time all the buds have opened, I can get 10 days to 2 weeks bloom out of a scape in a vase. Which is nearly as good as when it in the pot. Vases are also a way to save scapes which have broken off, just as the buds are swelling and getting color. At that point, they will go on to bloom normally in water. Broken off scapes used to be a major issue for me when I used cheap plastic pots that would tip over as the plant got top heavy. Last year, I started using a heavy clay pot which has ended that tip over problem.
