I have the same problem, Frill. I saved plastic lids from coffee cans, etc., and cut them to size to create a barrier between the rug and the chair. Keeps my iron table legs from leaving a rusty ring, too.
Also, you could paint the bottom of the legs with 'Flex Seal'. It comes in white, black, and even clear. It give it a rubber, water proof finish.
