There's a summer squash variety called "Tatume" that is not bothered by borers. It has hard stems and the borers leave it alone (the leaf stalks are hollow and those will get sometimes borers, but it just kills one leaf) Also the vines root at every node where they touch the ground. The vine are long and fast-growing, and even just one plant will try to take over your garden, so give them lots of room.
