seems pretty extreme. But I don't know. Consider your site, how sheltered or open.. Also, bear in mind, you'll have till, maybe January? before the deep freeze hits so you do get a long time in the fall. Another- protecting with row cover or something? I kept lettuce all winter once with milk jugs between and a row cover tent. It's not that much warmer here.
Long Island, do you really get that cold very often? Might be worth the risk,
Plant it and they will come.
