Salvia coccinea is native to Florida, It is a perennial here and also spreads very well by seeds. I also planted one plant decades ago and now it reseeds and grows all over my garden, seems to prefer shallow sandy areas out of irrigation and partly sunny. @Miamiu purchase a plant or seeds from a native plant distributor to assure you get the real 'Salvia coccinea'.
