When I ran out of labels I just bought used light coloured window blinds, took them apart and cut them into about 5 inch lengths. I used a felt tip pen on one side and a carpenter's pencil on the other side to write the plant name, with one or the other being pushed in to the dirt. This way I was confident one side would be legible for many years - three at least
