Jelinda...hoyas grow very similarly to orchids. They are epiphytes, basically. When they feel secure and anchored in a tree (we use pots) they will start to grow and then bloom. That is the reason for keeping them pot bound. Hoyas like air around their roots as well...

H.lacunosa 'polyneura' AKA- fishtail = There is H. lacunosa and there is H. polyneura AKA Fishtail. They are very different. H. lacunosa likes warm, lots of light and lots of water. H. polyneura grows better in cool temps and prefers to be on the dry side.

H. carnosa and all of her cultivars is from N. China and likes to grow cool,dry-ish and gets along in low light very well. Hoyas are basically understory plants so few of them like direct sun all day...better on and off sun.

The clue to understanding hoyas is finding out where they are from and understanding the growing conditions of that area. I fail miserably with hoyas from high altitudes ... Some hoyas like to grow dryer in the winter because where they come from winter is the dry season (all hoyas from N. Australia)....
It's all about choices.
