There are two sub-species of Hypericum hypericoides. Hypericum hypericoides ssp. hypericoides and Hypericum hypericoides ssp. multicaule. When you have more than one sub-species the original name become a generic catch all for that species. In this case Hypericum hypericoides would be used when you are not sure which of the sub-species you have.
