With Sans, it's the cultivar variegation that can't be preserved by cut leaf propagation. For example, when I do 'Whitney', I almost always get very dark green leaves that are plain. One time I got an almost albino rosette, bright yellow. but it didn't survive after being separated from the host. There are posts about it & pics around here somewhere.
I'm not sure if that relates to propagating an AV leaf.
