Some clematis do not need to be pruned… they can remain on trellis or whatever plant tree they hang on all winter to present next years garden with an abundance of blooms. Don't do the one foot tall pruning just so the garden look neat and tidy . You'll be robbing the garden of next seasons blooms. You can clean them up and organize them better . I never prune any of my clematis for the explosion of blooms to see the next season. Clematis are perennials. Could you pot pics?
