I have managed to both grow them from seed and keep them alive for a couple of years by keeping them in clay pots (they dry out more quickly, so less danger of rot) in a somewhat shady area in my garden here in the frozen northland. My main problem is overwintering them without them getting eaten alive by aphids.
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.
