Hi Fixpix, I recently joined the local Pacific Northwest's (Seattle and region) Gesnariad society, (which is African violets, Streptocarpus, Gloxinia, and many other types) and what I "get from this" is; more info about specific plants, hearing about plants I already have/know something about, or hearing about brand new plants that I like! Also sharing photos, or even baby plants, so I'm building my plant collection!
Its been very valuable to me. Oh yes and also being around people that love plants as much as I do, and wanting to share their knowledge and joy!
Good luck, I think its a good idea, and you may find that there are more people than what you expect, who have an interest!
