I don't know how similar growth habits are but a couple of homes around here grow Tetrapanax papyrifer. With mulch they grow back every spring but the clumps don't get very tall, less than 2m with smaller leaves.

I'm experimenting with a heavy (green) grass clipping mulch over some Arisaema which don't like wet winter soil.
