Flower color is controlled by enzymes. As with most flowers, soil and ambient temperature can have a subtle to radical affect on flower color and even patterning. Since they bloomed in May last year, the warmer temps, about 25 degrees warmer, is most likely what made them go almost all red. Now is probably their normal bloom time and the soil and ambient temps are much cooler.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
