The grafted ones stay compact, from what I've heard. Mine are all own-root because the gophers ate the original graft on one and I've been sticking pieces in the ground ever since. Gophers like Dr. Huey. They rarely leave enough of it to grow into those "pillars of shame" that occasionally embarrass me.
