I like neat gardens.

I think to get the "English cottage garden" effect, I aim for, (viz. un-regimented/unstructured appearance),
it takes a lot of policing, some degree of structure and lots of work (just as you say));
especially, if you want continuous colour throughout the growing season, over the years.

From your own garden pictures, you have a very meticulously neat and very attractive garden (and property).
Your work too; I'd strongly recommend it any time!
