Those beds by the back patio are slightly raised. I only mixed in compost when I planted them original (2011)and I feed them alfalfa pellets or alfalfa tea in the spring and then again mid summer. They are mulched and we did have a very cold winter this year.

Peg: Josephine hasn't bloomed for you yet? I always think us northerns are the last to see clematis bloom.
