One thing that the English do over rare clones is to place a pane of glass. That serves two purposes. The plants are warmed under the glass (like a mini cold greenhouse) and it also protects them from two much wet weather. Some of the semps from the far eastern part of the range (Turkey and Armenia) don't like the winter wet too well and will survive better under the glass. I'm betting the spathulifoliums would be similarly happy.
