I find that the home button in the gray bar is much more convenient when I am at the top of any page. Clicking a button that requires less movement of the cursor (rather than getting to the top left corner) is a lot easier with the mouse, and doubly so for those that use a mouse pad.
The partially superimposed gray bar over the banner adds a more professional look. Think of how old school it would seem like if it was completely separate.
