Yes, the insert is a basket that would have held the jars. I would call mine an oval rather then cylinder and it has a lid on top. I was also thinking that it might get too hot in the sun...also in my part of Florida we do get down to freezing in winter...sometimes hard. Really want to put something in it that can live there ALL the time. Hostas maybe ??
