I have been looking at arrangements on line and noticed some in glass containers. Are those just temporary or is there a way to arrange in small glass containers with deeper pebble base and no drainage holes?

i see no reason why you cant do that just water very lightly. I would use nothing that can break down like soil, just rock, and use very light fertilizer every now and then.
