One of the funniest, but could have been disastrous, things that happened to me at the show... One of our members was looking for something to do to "help" us with the horticultural classifications. She had been moving plants from our area to the guys that do the placements on the tables. Being a little bored, she picked up some scissors and said she needed to groom one of my plants.... I looked up just in time to see her snip the bloom stem off my black bromeliad!! All I said was , "Oh no, you're kidding, right?" But she lifted the stem telling me it needed to come off because......and then she saw the long red bloom at the bottom of the stem she had just cut off... She thought it was 'an old stem' for some reason.
Had it happened to any number of other exhibitors, she'd have had some 'splaining to do! I gave her a new name, "Edward Scissor Hands." She managed to poke the stem back into leaf it came out of. I still got a blue ribbon, so all was well...but I bet she never, ever decides to groom anyone's plants without asking... ever again!
