This is what I do, too. I go to where the vines are first coming out of the ground and I feel around under the soil. You'll feel tubers and you can judge for yourself whether they are ready. Don't wait too long, and once you pick them cure them in the garage (or some other dark and warm place) for about 10 days before you bring them in for long-term storage.
