Smiles! Later the day I wrote this, I did find gulf fritillary caterpillars on this vine. As of a few days ago, it's gone. Might be back to square one... it's not easy to provide host plants consistently.

I don't think all of the caterpillars here were able to complete their mission to become butterflies, but there are many cocoons stuck to things around it.
