I'm in NYC & I have sometimes had daffodils start to come up in the Fall. I didn't mulch them but they were covered with pine needles. As soon as it got really cold they went dormant. They stayed a pale green & then bloomed like normal in Spring. I don't know about Canada but we've had a very mild Sept/October so that could be why they started to grow. I think they'll be okay but maybe that far north you should mulch them.
