Evan, yes I can leave it in the ground all year. However, saying that, I used to have two others but I haven't found them in recent times so they might have died. This one has gone from strength to strength in the last three years. The herb around it is a native ground cover whose name escapes me at the moment. This is the bud today (10.5" 26cm). There is a smaller plant shooting next to it that I will move this year. The main plant will not emerge until the flower is finished in December if the previous flowering can be gone by.
