I have a H. carnosa 'Hindu Rope' that was just one long piece. I clipped a cutting from the end of that piece, made a small hole in the soil, and merely stuck it right back into the pot…It is growing like crazy! I don't know if this is just that the H. carnosa is very simple to root? Or if I was just lucky. Shrug!

Which Hoya is it that you have?
