The squirrels seem to react to scent. Try bone meal or cayenne pepper. If they do not like the smell they will stay away. I also have had no problems since I started using milorganite, no rabbits or cats or squirrels. However, dogs like it a lot and they will dig up all your plants and lay all over them and roll around in it. LOL.
