Bill, down here in FL they are widely used as landscape plants in partial to full shade. Could be we get just a little more intense sun than Dave does in TX. They like lots of water and do fine in the dappled shade under oak trees.

I have a whole bunch of them, and the one that blooms the best is in nearly full shade under a huge bougainvillea. Seems to take a few years for them to get big enough to bloom, though.
