hawkarica said:Ken, I don't understand your confusion about Blc. Mahina Yahiro x C. Ruth Gee 'Diamond Jubilee'. Everything there is registered including the new offspring. Let me go through the process. Your tag shows the parents of the orchid. The first thing I have to do is verify those names are current. In this case, the Blc. has changed to Rlc. on the Mahina Yahiro. So, I look to see if a cross between Rlc. Mahina Yahiro and C. Ruth Gee has been registered and I found it has indeed. The new name of your orchid is Rhyncholaeliocattleya [Rlc.] Exotic's Summer Cloud. Therefore, you can change your tag to read Rlc. Exotic's Summer Cloud. So, what is the issue about something not being registered?

On the second one you gave me like that, Blc. Meditation 'King's Ransom' x Blc. Xanthette 'Chartreuse', I went through the same process. I found that both parents are now Rlc orchids but that their cross has not yet been registered. That could be for various reasons, I have no way of knowing. Perhaps the hybridizer didn't want to fork over the money they charge for the privilege of naming his own orchid.

Thanks, Bert, you are right on.

Melissa, I love your Paphs. Wish I could grow them.

Jim

Hi Jim and Ken,

I use the RHS database to look up the orchids. It is a good free visual without the heavy investment of Orchid Wiz. http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...

It was confusing because the seed and pollen parent were swapped on RHS. It is possible that Ken's plant was the opposite breeding, which results in the same name as they don't differentiate pollen vs seed parent except at registration. No matter the pollen or seed parent, the cross results in the same name.

In the RHS, Mahina Yahiro is the pollen plant (which would be listed after the seed parent). So when it was originally registered, it was Ruth Gee x Mahina Yahiro.

On the second orchid, according to RHS it has been registered as RLC Misty Green.

Of course, the RHS does not recognize clonal names as that is specific to the breeder or owner so it is a good idea to keep the original tags and a journal for complete information.
