And Elephant Garlic has long, thin tubular leaves like onions or regular garlic. This looks like it could be a type of ginger, though. Very hard to tell until it blooms.

MaryK could you describe what the bulb looked like before you planted it? Was it long and flat like a rhizome? or roundish and pointed like a tulip bulb? Or? What color?

Are you in a warm part of the country, or is this a bulb that dies back in winter and comes up again in spring? Or will it be a house plant? If your friend thought it was an Elephant Ear, well that is a very cold-tender plant. Did your friend have a big plant or clump of the same kind, and give you a division? Did you see the big plant?
