yes, for most things I use a wooden cutting board, for hard spices I use a hard plastic cutting board. I'm been making a lot of Indian dishes lately and I grind the spices with the rock and then toast them. Things like peppercorns and cloves need a harder surface than wood but softer things like garlic and ginger work fine on wood.
