I have some seedlings that got me wondering what I would name it if I registered one (several years from now
). I was just reading up on the rules that became effective on January 1, 2013. I was surprised that a newly registered daylily cannot have the name of a previous Stout medal winner in its name.
For instance, the word "Playboy" cannot be used because a daylily with that name won the Stout medal in 1961. I bet a lot of names get kicked out because of that rule! There are three other names in the database with the name "Playboy" in them, but they were registered before this rule took effect.
Besides that, I was also surprised that there were so many rules. But as I read through them, they all made perfect sense and eliminates a lot of confusion.
All I've done in the past was check to make sure that a name hadn't been used before, but there is a lot more to naming a daylily than I previously thought.
Reading those possessive rules really taxed my pea-brain, though!
