I'd go for a really large pot, Dan. Down here in FL, unless you get the roses grafted on Fortuniana, the resistant rootstock, they peter out and die if planted in the ground. Nematodes love them. But they need lots of room to grow a healthy root system.

Then there is every fungal spore known to man or plant floating around here, so it really is a challenge to grow good roses here. I've had the best success with the supposedly disease resistant types, like 'Easy Does It' and the Knock-Outs. 'Jude the Obscure' looks like a beauty, though.

Btw, some shade in the middle of the day in summer helps them a lot. Morning and evening sun, but shade from the worst of it. Especially a rose in a pot, or you'll be watering it twice a day.
