Fred - It's amazing how different two sibling seedlings can look, isn't it?! Both of those are beautiful! It's almost like looking at a photo that has been color-changed. Similar in many ways except color!
Karen - I can relate. I once wanted acreage, but now that I am older, I am finding that a residential lot is more than enough to care for. Of course, I don't have just daylilies ... I garden for butterflies and hummingbirds (as well as all other creatures). So I have all kinds of different plants. And maintaining all of that sure keeps me busy year round!
Two more first to bloom seedlings today. Both of these were grown from seeds from
@Hemlady (Cindy):
Cherry Custard Cheesecake x Palace Garden Beauty. 19" scape, 4 1/2" blooms, and 10 buds. This one looks a lot like the pod parent. Petite blooms that are quite charming. I don't have anything else like it currently, so it's a nice addition. A little rust on the leaves.
Actually there were 2 blooms on it today:
The other seedling is interesting and disappointing at the same time. Of course, this is the very first scape and it can change in a couple more years. The interesting thing was the color blend. It appears to resemble to the pollen parent. The disappointing thing was that it is literally blooming down in the foliage. I am hoping the scapes get more height in the future!
Galaxy Explosion x Lily Munster. 10" scape, 6 1/2" bloom, and 5 buds. No rust. I've noticed that about all the spiders/UFO daylilies don't appear to attract rust. That is a VERY good thing!

I post all the stats and photos to show others that might be trying hybridizing or want to try it, so they can see all the different possibilities when you cross plants. You never know what you will get!
